Viscose/Handpainted warp

One of the last fabrics for the book will be made from a hand painted viscose warp and gold polyester weft. Below shows the process, it will be printed using a geometric twill type screen.

The aim was to print the screen when the warp was still wet so the pattern blurred.

Grand Metropolitan Opera

Using information we have gathered from our research, we know that bold pattern and darker outlines work well as a shadow tissue. With this in mind we are using a design from the archive called Grand Metropolitain Opera to create samples for the book.

We knew when we saw this sample that it would be suitable.

We then played with scale and repeats to discover what size of screens would be made.

Screen registration took place.

The warp was wound, threaded and laid onto the table ready to be printed. For this fabric, the warp is striped black/cream and black/grey.

The black reactive outline is printed onto the warp

Followed by the white pigment discharge sections.

The warp is theaded and tied back onto the loom in preparation for weaving

Weaving commences using bands of black and white for the weft.

Houndstooth Length

I am continuing with the lengths for the book so the next one I have done is a Houndstooth design of pink pigment discharge with a black reactive outline on a yellow and black mercerised cotton warp.

Printing takes place using 2 pre registered screens, a pink pigment discharge for the bold part and a black reactive outline.

The warp is rolled from the table onto the back beam.

A black weft is inserted during weaving.

After the fabris is woven, it is steamed and washed, ready to be cut into samples for the book.
